With cold and flu season upon us, parents are yet again faced with the task of keeping their hardworking students healthy. Though illness is seemingly unavoidable, you can help decrease the probability of your child contracting airborne bacteria and viruses if he or she knows the proper way to sneeze and cough. Coughing and sneezing spreads germs that can cause serious respiratory illnesses such as influenza.
It is important to remind and educate our children as well as ourselves of the ways we can help stop the spread of germs that make us sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer the following tips to help stop the spread of germs:
- When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.
- If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not into your hands.
- Put your used tissues in the waste basket.
Always wash your hands with soap and water after coughing or sneezing. You might also try using alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or hand sanitizers.
Reinforce the above practices daily, so that they become habit. A healthy child is a happy child!
